Story Sale

Posted in Writing at 8:47 pm by Van Aaron Hughes

Just got word that my flash piece “The Burbles” has sold to The Dream People.

I am very pleased, because “The Burbles” was my first attempt to write Bizarro fiction, and The Dream People is a respected Bizarro publication.  It’s editor-in-chief, D. Harlan Wilson, is one of the leading Bizarro authors — I read his novel Blankety Blank, which was about . . . um . . . well, Bizarro can be hard to describe.

My story will appear in November in Dream People Issue #36.

I’ve been seeing that word over and over again. Bizarro fiction. What is it?

  2. Bizarro combines weird, surreal story elements with an up-yours attitude.

I first encountered Bizarro in a terrific story by Carlton Mellick III called “Porno in August,” and I’ve grown to really enjoy the genre, although I have to be in the right mood to read it. Carlton Mellick is probably the best known Bizarro writer — most of his works have absurd, in-your-face titles like Razor Wire Pubic Hair and The Baby Jesus Butt Plug.

Bizarro seems not to play well with the other literary genres. It has its own publishing houses, including Eraserhead Press and Raw Dog Screaming Press, and its own magazines, including The Dream People and Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens.
